Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church History
In the Year of Our Lord 1874, a group of dedicated brethren came together and formed a
worship circle: Rainey Ruth, Mr. Copeland, and R. Mitchell Sr. The first meeting was held at a
place called Alligator Branch. After several successful years, they were inspired to move on.
Worship service moved to Sandridge and they continued to pray that God would give them
direction.
After a period of time, God moved their hearts to build a house for the Lord where they could
worship Him in any weather. They built a temple and named it Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist
Church. Reverend Steven Young was invited to come and give the Word. He became the first
permanent Pastor. During his leadership, Pastor Young ordained others to assist him in
carrying out God’s work. Early church leaders included Bud Terry, Owen Walker, Jake Ruth,
Perry Mitchell, Lonzo Dunbar, and Steven Grant. As time passed, other leaders included Joe
Grant, B. Bush, A. Early, Garvin, Hammie Brunson, and Hicks. Eventually, Reverend Hicks
became Pastor at Mt. Sinai. He added Snowden Buckner to the Deacon charge. Over the
course of many years, other leaders were ordained as deacons as well: Richard Mitchell,
Chester Lingard, Grand Lingard, Israel Walker, Sylvester Mole, Robert Williams, Jessie Smith,
Quillie Buckner, Bert Buckner, Joe LIngard, John Walker, Joe Grant, Clarence Wrice, Anthony
Buckner, Willie Grant, John Campbell, and Carmell Young. Additionally, several ministers were
licensed: Minister Debra Darby, Minister John Smith, and Minister Ronald Scott.
Over the years, several other servants of God served as Pastor at Mt. Sinai:
Reverend Norman Wilson
Reverend Rivers
Reverend Audrey Lofton
Reverend Thomas Williams
Reverend Jesse Jamison
Reverend Thomas Darby, Jr.
Reverend Alexander Washington
Currently, Reverend Albert G. Frost is serving as Pastor at Mt. Sinai. Pastor Frost is working to
expand the transformative power of Christ within each member, as well as beyond the walls of
the church. Evangelist Cindy Broughton and Evangelist Vermell Walker assist Pastor Frost with
ministry. The Deacon Board includes: John Walker, Chairman; Clarence Wrice; Freddie Grant;
and Carmell Young.
We thank God for those of the past and the present who sowed seeds that harvest many souls
for Christ Jesus our Savior. It is the hope that our church family will continue to be grateful for
our heritage and mindful of the sacrifices of those that came before us. To God be the glory!
